Paul Brubacher - Trinity Broadcasting Network
Trinity Broadcasting's Lighting Director Paul Brubacher wanted a single-source, single-shadow LED light with color changing abilities for his lighting of TBNs Praise The Lord program. He was not satisfied with the crop of LED lights that were on the market.
Says Brubacher,
"I have been working with LED units in my lighting designs for a while now, mostly as set washes or to light the scenic backdrop. I am impressed by how bright the RevEALs are compared to previously-used LED units. For LEDs, they are very bright.
I currently use the RevEAL CW lights in three areas on the set of the award-winning Praise The Lord program, Trinity's flagship variety and talk show, which originates from the TBN studio in Santa Ana, CA. I use five of the units for backlight on the interview area of the set that has a scenic backdrop of the view from LA across Orange County at sunset.
The idea for this area was to replace 1kW Fresnels. I wanted to see how the lights work from a heat and energy-savings standpoint. They work very well in this role. I like that I can tweak the white color temperature and warm it up or cool it down depending on who's sitting there being interviewed.
It's also nice to be able to change the color temperature to match the scenic backdrop. I am using Prism's RT lens that spreads the beam horizontally for the backlights in this area. The RevEAL CW with a 95 CRI uses Prism's TrueSource™ optical and color management technology.
For the singer's area that handles music spots, I am using RevEAL CW units, replacing the two 575W automated lights I previously used for this portion of the set. The RevEALs, because of their ability to color change, work great here. I get nice, smooth color changing compared to a light with spinning color disks. I was only using the automated lights for their color capabilities and never moving them, so this is much more economical. For a new small set used for specials in the studio, I put in a single RevEAL CW unit. I needed color changing and have to use a 70° beam spread here since the light is so close.
Though the RevEAL CW brightness is good, we aren’t quite ready to use them as keylights instead of our 2kW Fresnels. We are looking forward to the RevEAL Studio fresnel version from Prism, which I understand is coming out soon.
It is nice having a single source and not having multiple shadows. A single source LED fixture with the ability to change color temperature integrates very well with traditional lighting."
